About the Mayor

The Mayor is the Civic Head of the Council. In May of each year, one of the Councillors is elected to serve as Mayor for one year and another elected as a Deputy. The Mayor chairs meetings of the Full Council and represents the city at ceremonial occasions. The Mayor also welcomes international visitors and attends events organised by local people.

The Mayor for 2025/2026 is Cllr Dr Matt Lamb

Cllr Dr Matt Lamb was born in Birmingham in 1970 and spent most of his childhood in the South-East where he lived on Canvey Island in Essex. Matt moved back to the Midlands in 1984 and lived in Kidderminster before he went to university. He has lived in Worcester since 2001 and proudly calls the city his home.

Matt was elected to Worcester City Council in 2010, and he has been a councillor for 15 years and is now the councillor for Dines Green and Grove Farm.

He loves travelling (he has been to 85 different countries), going to the cinema and theatre, going to art galleries, walking in the beautiful Worcestershire countryside and visiting Worcester’s excellent pubs.

Matt lives in St John’s with his partner of more than 20 years, and their two rescue cats. Matt has a daughter, who is training to be an art teacher. Matt is enormously proud to become mayor of the city he knows and loves.

The Mayor’s theme for the year is ‘learning’ after spending his career in education.

In 1997, Cllr Dr Lamb started his career in education as a part-time lecturer in A-level Politics at Worcester College of Technology and went on to become a Head of Department and then Head of Faculty, while still carrying out teaching roles.

In 2011, he went to West Bromwich to set up a brand-new sixth form college in one of the most deprived areas of Britain. Central Saint Michael’s Sixth Form, where he is Principal, now has more than 900 students.

The Mayor’s charity for the year is Acorns Children’s Hospice. Acorns for the Three Counties, based in Worcester, provides vital care, love and laughter to around 260 local children and families every year. The hospice provides a home-like environment where children take part in a range of fun and therapeutic activities, from arts and crafts sessions to hydrotherapy. Their dedicated teams provide not only specialist clinical care for children and young people but a range of psychosocial services for the whole family. The majority of their income comes from fundraising, donations and the income from our charity shops.

A very busy year of engagements awaits the new Mayor of Worcester, and he is committed to attending as many as possible with his partner, Cllr Dr Zoe Cookson, as his Mayoress. He has also appointed a Consort who is Cllr Pat Agar.
